Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian that became part of her portfolio in 1996.
